FYI, I have rebased this PR on _xalan-java-mvn-refactored_ after XALAN-2709 was merged. Improvement idea: I suggest that this project adopts a rule that instead of merge commits and ugly loops and looplets like this, ...  ... we always require PRs to be rebased on the target branches they are to be merges into.
