Not following here. Why are you making this distinction?
Before relational database were popular tree based databases had alot more cloud than they have today. Eventually relational databases managed to take a good chunk of the market because they have the advantage of making it easy to relate data without being forced to duplicate information. at the same time they made data structures more fixed because you cant easily manage trees of information without expanding the entire structure of the database on a global level.
Anyways I am kind of scared that I will get slapped by all sorts of guys that were around back then and know much better than me. :-)
