MODS makes pretty extensive use of xlink, and the LoC is developing a companion schema to handle so-called "authority data" like names and such. That coupled with XQuery in an XML DB ought to be able handle the data duplication problem.

No doubt there are ways to "fix" these issues. The "other side" came up with views to solve some of their problems etc. Especially with more fast memory you can do alot of cool stuff :-) Anyways I just felt the need to pipe up against something that seemed like a very unbalanced statement.
