Generally, it depends whether you're using any Java code anyway. I'm a
co-developer of a grammar checker (LanguageTool) that will start
automatically in OOo 3.x (hopefully, 3.0), in Java, so JVM will be
started then anyway as soon as you open any document in a language
supported by LanguageTool.
Though it is off-topic here: I hope, only if background checking is
enabled!
Of course! It's works only when you have automatic spell & grammar
checking enabled.

You must install it first and then you expect that it will work just as
in other office suites: in the background, but *only* if you have
automatic spelling & grammar checking enabled. It's a feature highly
desired, according to IZ. So our extension will provide a feature with a
high visibility in terms of user votes.
BTW, I discovered that standard users are perplexed why the extension
doesn't work when they have Java installed. Unfortunately, OOo doesn't
select Java VM automatically, even if it's the only JVM on the machine
and user installs an extension that requires Java. I consider it a
defect because I get questions from people that don't know they should
enable this option and complain that the extension is dysfunctional. It
means that from UX point of view, OOo behaves poorly.
