I believe in honesty and being up-front.
... and what's your name?
Commercial companies should not pretend to be altruistic Mother Teresa -- working for the common good.
We never pretended to be Mother Teresa, nor Red Hat Inc or MySQL AB.
You seem to have been surprised by the fact that Jahia Ltd is a commercial company. What made you think it wasn't?
I guess I was thrown by the warm fuzzy words like 'collaborative community' which seems to imply a community of equals working together for a common good. In Jahia it seems that some people are more equal than others.
Some of us worked full time during the last five years on Jahia.... Seems logical that they CURRENTLY have more power than others... Same is true for all the open source projects where board members or committers have more power than a part-time developer... Feel free to contribute if you want to gain respects and credits in our meritocracy: the Jahia project is open to everybody.
For which company are you working for?
I work for a commercial company which tells me BEFOREHAND how much it will pay me for my services. I do not have to depend on their kindness to decide AFTERWARDS if they will pay me for the work I did.
1) They PAY you for your work and 2) we already mentionned that the license credits are negotiated and provided BEFORE the work is done. Similar to any IT services contract. So no difference with your company. But perhaps the fact that you HAVE TO contribute something pro rata the use you are doing of the technology is disturbing you...
I have contributed to open source freeware in the past and would do it again.
Great. Continue. So we do. Please don't bark up the wrong tree.
I believe in a community of equals, not one with special rights for some.
If Jahia admitted openly that it is a commercial company looking for beta-testers to debug/develop in exchange for licenses, it would be in line with the norms. I was amused by Jahia calling itself a 'community' and then hiding the details in fine print.
As already mentionned, our licensing policy is harmful only to the one who attempts to get an unfair benefit of other peoples' work. For the others there is NO change in regards of a traditionnal F/OSS project. All the Jahia users are clear about their rights and obligations. Nobody is cheated. If you are not satisfied by our licensing conditions and the rules inside our community, please feel free to use any other more permissive open source software or to start a new project.
