Need for altering source in order to adapt?

In order to adapt Kannel for my operator's SMS-C (EMI/UCP) i need the UCP
XSER field (in UCP51 packets) to contain a value depending on the type of
message I send (billing codes and other stuff). Is it nessesary to change
the Kannel source for this to work or is there currently some feature
making this possible?
