symbol problems with Kannel?

hi all i am using kannel to provide Financial services to a bank client, however i am having problems displaying some symbols for example $ , [ and @ i am pulling the information from a HTTP website i keep getting some strange ASCII symbols that looks like a U with to dots on top of it? any help would be great.
