REF:- Nokia 8890 as GSM modem

Sorry to be a pain guys,   I can access the modem AT commands through IR but through the data cable I cannot gain access. I was hoping this phone would work with Kannel as the same commands as in sms_at2.c work through IR. Unfortunately IR is not stable enough to leave running - line of sight and all that.   Is there a special unlock or anything like that?
