I disagree in some sense. MMS is a part of the WAP protcoll stack, that's true. In theory you could use a proterietary SMS MT (or even the normal MMS notification) to indicate the URL where the phone should pull the message. As the connection to the SMSC is HTTP based, the phone may be (if capable) connecting directly to the HTTP and ask for the MMS. Hence the WAP gateway would be out of scope for that MMS related traffic. Think of Nokia's 7650 with the Photo Uploader function. It's a propertiery Nokia HTTP protocoll which lets the phone establish an IP connection (either CSD or GPRS) and talks to the ClubNokia server directly over HTTP without any WAP gateway between them. So in theory yes, it's possible. But I'm not aware of any phone that avoids talking to the WAP gateway.
