we have an abstracted 'keepalive' config directive for smsc groups for this purpose. In EMI/UCP case it will send O/31 PDUs and require to receive ACKs for it. If ACKs timeout, because Kannel still sees the physical TCP connection but non of the PDUs is ACKed, then Kannel drops the link and re-connects.
