You can set your phone to ask for DLR and in that case you'd get visible 
notifications to your phone when the message was delivered 
successfully. I know that some operators disable that option, but I 
have not yet used a network where DLR is indeed not possible for mobile 
handsets (and I have my phone set to DLR by default)

I think you have a confusion as to what is DLR.

Anyway - the new AT driver (which was at2 previously) has full support 
for DLRs as of version 1.3.2 IIRC
