Since Jon seems to have no problems with the correct sequence, there has to be a difference between our systems which makes the hand- generated escape fail. Two possible candidates: * keyboard layout (german layout without deadkeys) * locale (de_DE.UTF-8)
Since the laptops will go to countries where english is not the primary language, we'll have to test it with their keyboard layouts and their locale settings. If it only works with US keyboard layout, this is a non-starter. I do hope we can get rid of a few keys, current crowded keyboards indeed won't fit into the space we have. How many modifier keys are on the keyboard and can we use them to make Escape available? How many keys on the laptop keyboard can be pressed simultaneously? And are there other restrictions like only one key per line? How are we going to generate the Linux SysRq key combinations?
