Would separating the package preserve existing setups across upgrades?

It's not simply Enterprise/Server 'or' Desktops that use "own validating 
resolvers".
Here, that's standard/default for both.

Ideally, a mechanism to "leave existing configs as is", without exceptional 
intervention -- using kickstart, re-UNinstalling or re-DISabling after upgrade 
-- would be preferred.

I'm all for new capabilities.
What's concerning is the insistence on monkeying with (long) established, and 
perfectly viable/standard configurations.
