I'm sympathetic to your "we shouldn't block people from maintaining
things if they want to" argument, but I have to disagree here. There's
only so much time that the community can collectively devote to Fedora
and this is not a place I'd like us to spend it. If someone really
wants to maintain a package that upstream has moved on from, then good
for them. But it's better for us to help other upstreams that depend
on this old version to use the newer library, whether that's by direct
contribution or peer pressure.
