I assume this update will only be pushed to rawhide when it's ready? Then you should be fine dropping i686 support when that happens (assuming that dependent packages get the same ExcludeArch treatment, of course). The only thing that's not OK as far as I know is dropping support for architectures during the lifetime of a stable release.
