Hello everyone,
i wanne bring this to your attention as Liveimages of Fedora 40+ do not
boot proper on hardware where Fedora 39 worked oob.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2390638
You find a lshw report in it to identify the hw. (HP Business Laptop
with amd+nvidia gpu mix)
This bugreport contains older information, maybe helpfull to identify
the issue the amdgpu driver has as it describes a painfull debug process
( I'm really sorry Scott ) and the results inside the system in form of
i2c & eda infos:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2342147
In short this happens:
while booting with amdpgu driver enabled, you end up with a black screen
in gdm and have to suspend and resume with a power cycle to get the gdm
login screen.
This got noted in the fedora 39 stable cycle and is valid for any os
version after a certain point in Fedora 39s lifecycle ( as a time
indicator : around Kernel 6.8.4 )
If a naked livedisk image of Fedora 39 is installed and only the
newest/newer kernel is/are installed, the system keeps booting normally.
As soon as the rest of the os is updated
to the latest packages of F39 ( others are not available anymore ) AND
the initramfs is recreated, two things are noteable:
a) the initramfs jumps from 56M to 100M
b) the system does boot into the black screen.
For better analysis i made the initramfses available via download. you
find the link in the first br.
Any livedisk AFTER F39 also boots into the blackscreen Fedora 42 including.
We tested it with round about 10 different kernels of Fedora 39 to get
sure, from top to bottom and back:
from a not yet identified software stand onwards, the iniramfs gets
screwed with informations/exec/libs that messup the init of the amd
hardware, no matter which kernel(and therefor amd driver version) it is.
And it's not: systemd, udev or dracut. Those got ruled out by upgrading
them, recreating the initramfs and rebooting.
My personal favorite is a data file, that contains ids of adm hardware.
As i have no clue what files end up in the initramfs that regard amd hw,
I was unable to identify it yet.
Dracut btw. says the cpu would not support the earlyfirmware, so it does
not get included.
best regrads,
Marius Schwarz
