I want to steer a delicate path between being a proper fork and being something temporary that we do downstream. We don't have enough people to maintain a real fork. The issue with Augeas upstream is that the code is very difficult to modify, so any actual fork is just going to suffer the same problem as upstream - not enough people available to review and merge patches.
