Hello Fedora packagers,

OpenVDB 13.1.0 has been released and introduces a shared-library SONAME change:

libopenvdb.so.13.0 -> libopenvdb.so.13.1

This requires coordinated rebuilds of packages that directly link against OpenVDB, as well as source packages that consume openvdb-devel.

The direct runtime consumers of libopenvdb.so.13.0 are:

OpenImageIO
blender
luxcorerender
usd

Source-level dependency analysis also identifies:

manifold
openvkl

as consumers of openvdb-devel.

The complete transition set is therefore:

openvdb
OpenImageIO
blender
luxcorerender
manifold
openvkl
usd

OpenVDB 13.1.0 provides:

libopenvdb.so.13.1()(64bit)

The update is planned for:

Fedora Rawhide
Fedora 45

I do not plan to introduce this ABI-changing update into older stable Fedora releases.

The transition is tracked in:

Bug 2535782
OpenVDB 13.1.0 SONAME transition tracker

The individual package bugs are:

Bug 2535783 - openvdb
Bug 2535784 - OpenImageIO
Bug 2535787 - luxcorerender
Bug 2535789 - manifold
Bug 2535790 - openvkl
Bug 2535791 - usd
Bug 2535792 - blender

The following Koji side tags have been created for the transition:

Rawhide / Fedora 46:

f46-build-side-151928

Fedora 45:

f45-build-side-151930

The side-tag build commands are:

For Rawhide:

fedpkg build --target=f46-build-side-151928

For Fedora 45:

fedpkg build --target=f45-build-side-151930

To wait for the corresponding build repositories to be regenerated:

koji wait-repo f46-build-side-151928

koji wait-repo f45-build-side-151930

The planned side-tag rebuild order is:

Stage 1:

Bug 2535783 - openvdb

Build OpenVDB 13.1.0 first in both side tags.

Stage 2:

Bug 2535784 - OpenImageIO
Bug 2535787 - luxcorerender
Bug 2535789 - manifold
Bug 2535790 - openvkl

These packages can be rebuilt after OpenVDB 13.1.0 is available in the respective side-tag buildroot.

Stage 3:

Bug 2535791 - usd

usd BuildRequires OpenImageIO-devel, so it must be rebuilt after the updated OpenImageIO build is available.

Stage 4:

Bug 2535792 - blender

blender should be rebuilt last because it BuildRequires:

OpenImageIO-devel
usd-devel
manifold-devel

The dependency relationships are therefore:

Bug 2535784 - OpenImageIO
Depends On: Bug 2535783

Bug 2535787 - luxcorerender
Depends On: Bug 2535783

Bug 2535789 - manifold
Depends On: Bug 2535783

Bug 2535790 - openvkl
Depends On: Bug 2535783

Bug 2535791 - usd
Depends On:
Bug 2535783 - openvdb
Bug 2535784 - OpenImageIO

Bug 2535792 - blender
Depends On:
Bug 2535783 - openvdb
Bug 2535784 - OpenImageIO
Bug 2535789 - manifold
Bug 2535791 - usd

All package bugs block:

Bug 2535782 - OpenVDB 13.1.0 SONAME transition tracker

The effective build dependency graph is:

openvdb
|
+--> OpenImageIO --> usd --> blender
|
+--> manifold ------------> blender
|
+--> luxcorerender
|
+--> openvkl

Additional packages such as:

embree
materialx
oidn
olive
openshadinglanguage

BuildRequire OpenImageIO-devel, but they are not direct OpenVDB consumers and are not currently expected to require rebuilds solely for this SONAME transition.

The transition will be coordinated entirely through the side tags listed above so that OpenVDB and all affected packages can be rebuilt and tested together before being merged into the main repositories.

After each build stage, the corresponding side-tag repository should be regenerated before starting packages that depend on the newly built artifacts.

For Rawhide:

koji wait-repo f46-build-side-151928

For Fedora 45:

koji wait-repo f45-build-side-151930

After all rebuilds are complete, the transition will be considered ready when:

1.

   OpenVDB 13.1.0 builds successfully in both side tags.

2.

   OpenImageIO, luxcorerender, manifold, and openvkl build successfully
   against the new OpenVDB.

3.

   usd builds successfully against the updated OpenImageIO/OpenVDB stack.

4.

   blender builds successfully against the updated OpenVDB,
   OpenImageIO, USD, and Manifold stack.

5.

   No affected external package still requires:

   libopenvdb.so.13.0()(64bit)

6.

   Direct OpenVDB consumers instead require:

   libopenvdb.so.13.1()(64bit)

7.

   Applicable package test suites pass.

8.

   Both completed side tags have no broken dependencies and are ready
   to be merged.

If you maintain another package that directly links against OpenVDB or builds against openvdb-devel and it is not listed above, please let me know so it can be investigated and added to the transition if necessary.

Thank you for your help with the transition.

Best regards,
