In one week, 2026-09-25, or slightly later, I plan to update abseil-cpp
from 20260526.0 to 20260817.0 (Abseil LTS branch, August 2026)[1] in a
side tag for F46/Rawhide.
I do NOT plan to update abseil-cpp in F45/Branched: while this is still
technically feasible, the risk of trouble this late in the release cycle
far offsets the anticipated benefit of shipping more bugfixes. The
number and size of the packages rebuilt for abseil-cpp has only
increased over time, there are long dependency chains, and a number of
packages take a long time to build, have flaky tests, and/or are
otherwise fussy or brittle. Plus, the resulting update will be critpath.
Like all new calendar versions of abseil-cpp, this release breaks ABI
compatibility and bumps the SONAME version[2]. The breaking API changes are:
- absl::void_t is now deprecated; users should use C++17 std::void_t
directly.
- Hashtable iterators returned from insert/emplace are now non-iterable
(any prior use of iteration was likely a bug).
The shared library libabsl_crc_cpu_detect.so was also renamed to
libabsl_base_cpu_detect.so.
Testing in COPR[3] indicates that nearly all directly-dependent packages
are compatible. See the PR for details on how I came up with the list of
packages that link abseil-cpp libraries. The mozc package will need a
small change[4] to link libabsl_base_cpu_detect.so:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/mozc/pull-request/11, and the
onnxruntime will need a pre-existing FTBFS bug worked around[5][6].
I plan to rebuild all dependent packages in the side tag using
maintainer/co-maintainer or provenpackager privileges:
-|android-tools | -|astroid | -|bloaty | -|buildbox |
-|cockatrice | -|CuraEngine_grpc_definitions - et | -|fastnetmon |
-|frr | -|grpc | -|libarrow | -|libcompizconfig | -|libgeopmd |
-|libphonenumber | -|marble | -|merkaartor | -|migraphx - migraphx7.2
| -|mozc - mysql8.4 - mysql9.7 | -|ncnn | -|onnxruntime | -|opencv
| -|opentrep - openvino | -|osmpbf | -|protobuf | -|protobuf-c|||
-|qt6-qtgrpc | -|re2 | -|rocm-rdc - rocm-rdc7.2 | -|syslog-ng |
-|usbguard - vlc | -|webrtc-audio-processing|
Maintainers of all packages that will be rebuilt should have received
this email directly by BCC.
