Hello,

I propose creating a Bioinformatics SIG to improve the state of
bioinformatics and computational biology tooling in Fedora.
Bioinformatics researchers in universities and research institutions often
struggle to find a Linux distribution that is both focused on their domain
and kept up to date. Bio-Linux (Debian-based), which was the main
reference, has been discontinued. Debian Med is solid but tied to Debian's
slower release cycle.
Some researchers are using old Bio-Linux releases or struggling to find a
ready to use solution for their research.
Fedora's fast release cycle, fresh packages, and strong toolchain make it a
natural fit for academic and research environments, but no coordinated
effort specifically serves the bioinformatics community. That's the gap
this SIG would fill.
I'm looking for packagers interested in scientific software, researchers
who use Fedora and have opinions on which tools to prioritize, and anyone
who has already done related packaging work I should know about.
Also if you have feedback or comments about this proposal, please feel free
to start a conversation about it.

Priscila.
