I’ve maintained the python-fastapi package in Fedora for quite a while, long enough that I don’t entirely remember why I picked it up in the first place. I’ve been considering dropping it for some time, and the addition of dependencies on opentelemetry-sdk and opentelemetry-exporter-otlp-proto-http in FastAPI 0.142 has given me a reason to go ahead and do it.

These new dependencies mean either packaging a whole stack of opentelemetry packages (see the now-retired python-opentelemetry package) or dropping all of fastapi’s extras metapackages (“standard,” “standard-no-fastapi-cloud-cli,” “all,” and now “opentelemetry”). That shouldn’t directly impact any of the packages that currently depend on python-fastapi in Fedora, and it’s probably a sane way forward, although it makes the python-fastapi package less generally useful. Still, this latest straw has broken the camel’s back, motivating me to admit that I just don’t want to keep working on this package.

I am therefore orphaning the python-fastapi, fastapi-cli, fastapi-cloud-cli, fastapi-new, and python-sqlmodel packages. Directly impacted are python-fastmcp, python-logdetective, python-openapi-core, python-sentry-sdk, and python-sse-starlette.

I also intend to orphan python-agent-detector, python-fastar, python-rich-toolkit, and python-rignore, all of which I maintain solely as dependencies of one of the above four packages.
