This is a proposed Change for Fedora Linux. This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee. == Summary == Libchewing is an intelligent phonetic input method library for Chinese. Update libchewing package in Fedora from 0.13 to 0.14. Migrate system and user dictionary format to version 4 with support for enhanced language model. == Owner == * Name: [[User:kanru| Kan-Ru Chen]] * Email: kanru AT kanru.info == Detailed Description == Libchewing is an intelligent phonetic input method library for Chinese. The next release 0.14 will introduce a new system dictionary format and user dictionary format, the 4th generation of the architecture proposed in this RFC (https://hackmd.io/@sysprog/libchewing-rfc). The new version will be shipped with a new system dictionary that upgrades the original unigram model to a newly trained bigram model to improve conversion accuracy. With the new default dictionary the measured accuracy improves from original 91.21% to 96.96%. Upstream has evaluated dictionary pruned to different sizes and their performance: {| class="wikitable" |- ! keep_frac !! Size !! Accuracy |- | 0.1 || 4.9 MB || 96.96% |- | 0.2 || 8.2 MB || 97.08% |- | 0.3 || 12 MB || 97.18% |- | 0.5 || 17 MB || 97.25% |- | 0.7 || 22 MB || 97.28% |- | 1.0 || 28 MB || 97.35% |} 0.1 was chosen for its small size and still noticeable accuracy improvements. == Feedback == To be collected == Benefit to Fedora == Input methods that use libchewing as the backend (ibus-chewing, fcitx5-chewing, maliit-keyboard) will see improved first-choice conversion accuracy. Depending on the final dictionary shipped, the expected accuracy range from 96.96% to 97.35%. The new user dictionary format provides better user preferences customization. User dictionary will no longer interfere with automatic learning based on usage and has better algorithm upgrade compatibility. == Scope == * Proposal owners: ** Package libchewing 0.14 and new dependencies in Fedora. * Other developers: ** Test the API/ABI compatibility with the new libchewing version (No SONAME bump expected). * Release engineering: [https://forge.fedoraproject.org/releng/tickets/issues #Releng issue number] ** Test the compose with larger libchewing data file size. * Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change) * Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change) * Alignment with the Fedora Strategy: N/A == Upgrade/compatibility impact == Previous user dictionary at <code>$XDG_DATA_HOME/chewing</code> will be converted to v4 format in <code>$XDG_DATA_HOME/chewing/v4</code>. Old data will be kept so downgrade will just use the old data. Libchewing 0.13 supported experimental additional system dictionary files without configuration interfaces, this feature is temporarily removed. == How To Test == Install libchewing 0.14 from COPR https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/kanru/libchewing-git/ Follow the Chewing test page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Chewing == User Experience == * Improved conversion accuracy from original 91.21% to 96.96%. * Larger installed size (from 7.1 MiB to 11.1 MiB). == Dependencies == * The new version may require a new rust dependency: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2532634 (Closed) == Contingency Plan == * Contingency mechanism: (What to do? Who will do it?) ship 0.13.x if 0.14 slips * Contingency deadline: N/A (not a System Wide Change) * Blocks release? N/A (not a System Wide Change), No == Documentation == * RFC: https://hackmd.io/@sysprog/libchewing-rfc * Release Notes: To be added == Release Notes == -- Aoife Moloney Fedora Operations Architect Fedora Project Matrix: @amoloney:fedora.im IRC: amoloney -- _______________________________________________ devel-announce mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/[email protected] Do not reply to spam, report it: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/infra/tickets/issues/new -- _______________________________________________ devel mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/[email protected] Do not reply to spam, report it: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/infra/tickets/issues/new
