Well a NTC was not exactly what I suggested. I said you'll need a overcurrent/short protection for USB anyway, and a littelfuse/PTC introduces some "nice" welcome series R which even gets higher instantly on plugging in a device with high inrush current.
BTW bigger buffer C *may* make things worse, when ESR increases. Using a buffer C with low ESR is mandatory for the providing side (host) here, to minimize voltage dropouts.
