I have updated my M1 rc3, which also had pre-1.1 installed, with this very method and it worked. Are the rest of your network settings correct (gateway, DNS, ...)? Note that when booting in rescue mode, FN ignores whatever system configuration you have set (so that configurations that trigger bugs that render booting impossible cannot cause problems in rescue mode).
