Way to improve signal integrity include:

- using an extension board instead of a cable,

- making an extension board that translates to a 100 mil Nx2
  connector/header with the signals on one row and ground on
  the other row, so that you get a ground wire between signals
  on the ribbon cable,

- making the signals rise and fall as slowly as possible (slew
  rate, drive strength, caps, ...),

- keeping the cable as short as possible.

If it ain't broke don't fix it ;-)

I don't really know at what distances you should expect
trouble. 15 cm may be short enough. Joerg suggested on
#qi-hardware that, with signals in the 10 MHz range, you may
be able to survive up to 50 cm.

But, in addition to not having ground between the signals,
you also have to consider the distance the signals travel
in M1, on your board, and any small imperfections that may
exist in your circuit, such as mismatched termination, etc.
