I forgot to mention that Julien updated the Samba version on the installs... previously when you installed OpenChange samba version 4.0 was installed, now when you install openchange samba version 4.1.4 is installed...
But it seems as if the Python versions on OpenChange are also outdated verses the versions on CentOS 6.5 My fingers are itching to get this working J All of the best. Is there a recommended OS? Hi James, we are in the same boat. My current production environment is samba 3 with Microsoft Outlook clients (Pop3 accounts) and I am in the process of testing samba4 as a DC with active directory and I have been watching the following applications. Sogo Openchange & Samba4 I used CentOS 6.5 and installed samba4 to a point where I could get Windows XP, 7 & 8 clients to join a domain, do folder redirections etc etc... all the nice to haves bits. Samba is working well. Setting up GPO's is still new to me but I have a working setup in my sandbox. J However, my goal (and I failed) was to provide OpenChange services for Microsoft Outlook clients with Sogo web client. I found the following. 1) Openchange cookbook and the steps to follow is a mission as system paths need to be set, version numbers on the OS verses version numbers on the Openchange distributions don't match. Python errors, lib errors etc etc (one after another) and this is with CentOS 6.5 (I have popped a view emails to Julien and he is trying the installs on CentOS 6.5, last I heard he got much further than me, but I have no feedback on progress yet) One error after another just prevented me from getting openchange installed. I am hoping that Julien will publish what he finds on the Openchange website so we can figure this out somehow. 2) I never go the Zeg from Sogo working ether. The setup of (Microsoft Outlook Exchange Accounts) kept on disconnecting and I also attempted to use the forums, but with no luck. With the ZEG I could send emails from Sogo1 to Sogo2 on the web interface etc but after the first sent with outlook exchange accounts it disconnected and you had to recreate the outlook account before it would connect again. Sent the first email from outlook and it disconnects... 3) Samba4, out of all the apps above I got working as expected and hoping that in future I can get Openchange to work for me. My head is spinning on this one... I need it , I want it !!! I have even tried openchange on the Zentyal server platform and to my surprise Microsoft Outlook stayed connected to Openchange, so I must have missed something with the Sogo Zeg thingy. However when I tried to sent an email, I received RPC errors with OpenChange on Zentyal... and someone on the Zentyal forum commented that Openchange is not ready yet....? Why then include it on Zentyal ? There are lots of talk that openchange should not be used in production environments!? I don't know how true that is but hey, it is a great product in what I read... still need to experience it though J I love open source software but in some cases they don't play well together when it is developed and tested only on certain distributions of Linux. Hoping to hear from the Openchange team on the install progress so far for CentOS. Is there a recommended OS? Hi Folks, I am trying to build openchange with the hopes of putting it into production in the near future but I seem to keep running into problems with samba crashing when I connect an Outlook client. The outlook clients I have used so far are 2003 and 2007. I have seen very frequent crashing (of samba) on both, requiring me to restart samba in all cases for any further connections. I have made 4 attempts at setting this up so far. The first two were on Ubuntu 13.10, one from source using the guide on the openchange website and the other using the packages provided by Inverse. I then noticed that your cookbook states that the guide is tested with Ubuntu 12.04.1, so I repeated the process both from source and with the packages again on 12.04.1 and still seem to have the same issues. My current build is 12.04.1 from source, following the guide here: http://www.openchange.org/cookbook/initializing.html There are options given near the start of the tutorial for building either samba or samba-git. I have been using samba as I assume that is the most recent stable release and since I want to put this into production, I don't really want to use a nightly/unstable build. Before connecting outlook I used the sogo webmail interface to send an email to myself. This arrived in the sogo interface. When I connected the Outlook (2007) client it got as far as "All folders up to date" but the email that was showing in the sogo webmail did not appear in outlook. At this point I tried to send an email to myself using the sogo frontend and samba crashed. The samba log is huge, but the last few lines show this: MAPI Rop: 0x77 (30) MAPI Rop: 0x78 (36) emsmdbp_object_open_folder: opening openchangedb folder emsmdbp_object_open_folder: opening base mapistore folder mapistore_add_context_ref_count: context_is to increment is 4 /usr/local/samba/sbin/samba: Uncaught exception NSInvalidArgumentException, reason: Tried to add nil to array dcesrv_exchange_nsp_unbind dcesrv_exchange_emsmdb_unbind dcesrv_exchange_nsp_unbind dcesrv_exchange_emsmdb_unbind I also made a couple of previous attempts (on both 13.10 and 12.04.1) using a guide I found on the web. https://iabsis.com/EN/article/35/Samba4-and-OpenChange-on-a-Debian-or-Ubuntu -server/ I experienced similar problems with this too. Looking through the comments on this site I see that others are having the same difficulty and there was a response saying that crashing was common on Ubuntu, but running on CentOS is stable. Before I use up anyone's time trying to figure out what is wrong here - am I using the wrong OS? If you guys develop and do your primary testing on CentOS then I am happy to switch to that if it is going to make life easier. Is there a recommended or primary OS that this project works best on? Would appreciate any suggestions as I have been trying for almost a month now and have been unable to produce a stable solution.
