I read your mail too fast ;) with serial proxy you may forward bt SPP
traffic to a daemon listening on a local socket or TCP/IP.
For example you may create a serial proxy that forwards traffic to
gpsd and use the freerunner as an external GPS (it's an alternative
than using manually rfcomm).
If you do no want to use SPP and simple bt networking you may use PAN.
Finally, if your daemon will use TCP/IP you may connect to it both
with SPP and PAN.
