So, ARM is hard, not just because only a few people are using it at
this time, but because it's hard to compile things in acceptable time
(and the problem gets recursive).

I was wondering if we should just keep the status quo, and only have
automatic bumps through matter, or invest say 1000$ and build up a
cluster of real ARM boards with good I/O and enough RAM, like this
[1].

On the bright side, representative of BeagleBoard are probably going
to send me some new boards for free.
