Or worse, if you power down, reset to 1970. Hopefully at some time
during boot the OS will apply some sanity check to the RTC. Chronyd
takes the time stamp of the drift file on restart and if the system time
is before the drift file time it resets the system time to the drift
file time.
Simple, but it helps a lot.
