Is there any interest in having this tested before a final patch is 
committed?  I run only Debian here for practical reasons and so there is a 
possibility this won't work on other machines.  I fear a macro wrapper for 
setjmp in some environment, but I'm not quite sure what we'd do about it.

Might as well; it's used only inside freetype at this point when opening a 
new face; that operation involves a lot more memory than this.
