I've never tried to do this sort of thing, but I've been around long 
enough to see several requests like this. 

X only really *uses* 2 axes, but there are (or were) some X extensions
which make more axes available to applications which wish to use them.
I don't remember which they are, but IIRC SGI were involved in some of 
them.
