Hey Peter, I had your same wishes a while ago and the same proble struck me: the lack of of information about it.
One good thing is that all window managers are open source, so what I did was to download all the source I could and investigate how they work. I suggest you the same. Look for the small ones, with the few features and try understand how they work. Getting a copy of the X Window API might also help.
