Can you try XFree86 4.4, to see whether this has been fixed since 4.3 ?
Fortunately, I found a usable Debian package of XFree86 4.4 (http://ftp.fifi.org/debian-local/stable/unofficial/), which probably saved me several days of work.
Yes, the problem seems to have been fixed since 4.3.
I think it may be worth tracking this down, because I don't know if 4.4 will make it to the Debian Sarge release. How extensive are the radeon changes between 4.3 and 4.4?
