So it sounds like there is some interest on the part of the nedit
"organization", so I will volunteer to dig into the requirements for a
mentoring organization and move towards applying as a mentoring organization
which generally must be done between March 3 and March 12, 2008.

It's good that we have at least one person who is willing to mentor, at least
for one specific project.

I was hoping that someone who qualified as a student participant might be
lurking on this list and might have piped up--you still can ;-)

I have skimmed thru the FAQ (http://code.google.com/soc/2008/faqs.html) and
will do so again. I've noted a few requirements below, just to mention some
of the things we have to make sure of:

   * Some persons (and mentoring organizations) are not eligible to
participate: "Google employees, interns, contractors, family members, or
citizens of Iran, Syria, Cuba, Sudan, North Korea and Mynamar (Burma), with
whom we are prohibited by U.S. law from engaging in commerce, are ineligible
to participate."

   * There will be some (US) tax related paperwork that has to be
submitted--iiuc, generally either properly identifying a US taxpayer or
essentially certifying that a person or organization is not subject to US
taxes.

Also, some of the ideas I had in mind will probably not be acceptable:

   * there is a specific requirement that the project not be a documentation
project but instead be a coding project (we can, of course, require proper
documentation of code submitted as a coding project)

   * I'm not as certain, but my suggestion of a design for folding with proof
of concept code probably does not qualify on the same basis (but I'd be
tempted to submit the idea anyway, depending on certain other things, and let
them tell me/us that it doesn't qualify).

We will need available mentors for any project idea we accept (at least a
primary and a backup) and we need a project administrator and a backup.

Oh, and, iiuc, "we" can go into this either as an (informal) organization
(i.e., a group--and we don't have to be legally incorporated or anything like
that), or (iiuc), one of us as an individual can be a sponsoring
"organization". (That person would have to be the administrator and backup
administrator--I think (but am not sure) others could serve as the primary
and backup mentors.)

My primary interest in trying to get some SOC help for nedit is to move
folding forward. To support that, I think "we" need to work towards at least
a set of criteria for folding and maybe even a design (I would like to work
toward that end)--I'm afraid that a project to design and implement folding
will be too much for a single SOC participant/project (and group projects are
not allowed).

I wish I had started on this effort sooner--if this doesn't work out for this
year, perhaps we can get something going for SOC 2009 (which I will assume
will exist).

I do have some off-line obligations that will keep me quite busy for the next
two months, but if no one else wants to do things like volunteer to be the
administrator or fill out the mentoring organization application, I will work
toward those ends.

I will also (again, unless else someone steps forward) try to spark some
discussion on the list toward establishing criteria and/or a design for
folding.

So:
   * does anybody want to volunteer to fill out the necessary application for
us to be a mentoring organization?

   * does anybody want to volunteer to be an administrator or backup
administrator?

   * other volunteers for mentors?

   * if anybody in this group is not eligible because they are anything like:
"Google employees, interns, contractors, family members, or citizens of Iran,
Syria, Cuba, Sudan, North Korea and Mynamar (Burma), with whom we are
prohibited by U.S. law from engaging in commerce, are ineligible to
participate." please either make that known to me publicly (sp?) or
privately, or refrain from volunteering as either a mentor or adminstrator.

I don't think I would qualify (or put myself forward) as a mentor for
anything, but I would be interested in sort of being a shadow
mentor--possibly, for instance, being copied on emails that went back and
forth between the mentor(s) and student participant in hopes of learning
something, especially if the (or one of the) SOC project(s) was folding
related.

Comments, criticisms, suggestions?
