Sure, this XXX background is ugly, we should also have an option to
say, which chars are regognized as the 'first' char. For example:

that continues not at the '*' |

if we set this to the word delimiter list, we get this

Could we add to this project/idea glyphs for control characters, I
really don't like these <bla> things, it gets worst, if you want to
count columns, because they don't count as one char.
