The guiding idea behind mine was to eliminate the env file -- something I feel needs to also be done with the merged bldenv/ws replacement that I imagine could happen at some point. The Delphix folks also have a "zload" script that is currently highly-dangerous. I suspect it'll benefit from the tarball half of your script, as well as some judicious use of beadm(1M). Thanks!
