OS X Disk Arbitration has always had FSProbeOrder, so, no, probe order alone is
not a panacea for the described problem, though, yes, like partitioning, probe
order can and does help. Partitioning makes an unsafe world a little safer,
especially when things are cross platform or when tools unaware of ZFS (or any
particular file system) may be involved. If geom's intelligence makes you think
that partitioning doesn't add sufficient additional safety to justify its
costs, so be it. But in the spirit of interchangeable parts, I'd urge you to
reconsider.

More generally, I think we all (and I'm certainly not saying you do) need to be
more careful about saying things like, "ZFS likes being given full
devices/whole disks/entire disks" because I don't think that was ever intended
to mean, "ZFS makes partitioning unnecessary," or "ZFS works best with
unpartitioned devices," but that is apparently its effective meaning on FreeBSD
without further clarification and elaboration.
