I think the problem with MPs is that they are oily rags, not mechanics. Most of the things people want changed/sorted are handled at a higher level. They can be a conduit, but a direct FoI request is probably quicker. Their opinion on most things are pretty irrelevant, they do what the whips tell them.
They aren't useless - if you had no MP, then you can be sure that all the landfill/nuclear/traveller/prison and other sites for the whole country would be put in your backyard... but having warded off most of the nasty stuff (just by being there)... that is pretty much their job done. MEPs even more so (does anyone know what they do apart from turn up?). IMHV of course...
