> Does mysociety as an org have a position on the PDC?

*I* have a view, which is that the trading funds should have their
legal status changed as part of the PDC creation process, and that
short-term profits for the exchequer should be deleted as their
primary reason for existing. I also think that once they've been given
a better mission, they should be independently regulated.

mySociety can only take positions if the trustees (of whom I'm not
one) agree, and if doing so is within charities law. But we should
certainly talk about it, yes.

Hi

at ORG we are not bound by the Charity Commission and would be happy to help in
a campaign on the PDC

At present it is difficult to know where this is heading without more
information from the government so that would be a priority, even if
politicians themselves only have sketchy details

As to what is affected, this report is probably useful
http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file45136.pdf

"The study focused on the six largest trading funds by data provision: the Met
Office, Ordnance Survey, the UK Hydrographic Office, the Land Registry,
Companies House and the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency."

My personal reading so far of what they may be trying to do is rather about
scaling up from independent developers and iphone apps to big suppliers and
market level innovations that generate economic value at a wider level, and not
necessarily through charging for data, but who knows... in the end economic
value means someone somewhere parting with cash
