No, you're not allowed to use Google's geocoding except for the purpose of placing pins on Google Maps.
"the Geocoding API may only be used in conjunction with a Google map; geocoding results without displaying them on a map is prohibited" http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/geocoding/#Limits For postcodes, mapit definitely the best bet. Nobody I can find offers a decent, free, international geocoding service, that isn't rate limited, and you can use for any purpose. The best you can get, even paying, that I can see, is geonames.
