I have found that email addresses can be kept completely free of spam
for years if the email address is kept off the web. Once it's in public
space, you are stuffed.

I reckon more email addresses are harvested from address books from infected computers than from crawling the web. Web crawling to gather email addresses would seem to me to be very inefficient.

But it's not a problem if your email provider has a decent spam filter. I use SpamAssassin with ClamAV and that blocks 99% of spam (which is very roughly 50% of the mail to my main very-public and long-lived email address).
