We could have done, but I think commons/logging did not exist yet back
then, when we created it. 

Actually the mmbase logging framework is very similar to
commons/logging.

No, I think you understood well. Anyhow, the point is not if we should
use an abstraction layer or which one that should be. Those issues are
settled. The anwers are yes, and org.mmbase.util.logging. I don't know
what the link to bilelog had to offer here; it was not to the point.
