+1 for adding the needed hooks (if any) for it to work as a optional implementation that is easy to install, -1 for putting the code itself in the core for the reasons outlines by Gerard. Also i think if gerard feels its to much a license problem it should be a VETO instead of a -1 we can't do this and bring the core in possible license danger. Also i would keep the old version default simple because all the people who use clustering are smart enough to download and install the new version. Maybe add a warning message to the startup if the old one is used (this implementation is for testing only, if you want production strenght version install XYZ). The same we do for the internal database today.

PS: i am more than willing to help to add this to mmbase as a applications but it would be handly if the currect users of clustering help out its easest for them to test,
