try to answer your questions.
The IRC server is not maintained by the MMBase community but
Slashnet.org. You claim to be banned for some reason, that can be
related to the IP-address you are using. When you use a dailin
account it is very likely that someone before you misused that IP-
address and was banned. Are you able to use a different IP-address?
Using an irc-lient you should connect to the server
'irc.slashnet.org' and then issue a join command to join the channel
'#mmbase'.
Which version exactly did you download from cvs and what error or
exception did you get trying to build it. Our download page http://
www.mmbase.nl/download lists the current releases of MMBase besides
HEAD btw.
