A connection does never time out. Keep alive msgs are send to detect a
connection lost because there are sometimes half-open connections (one
side is connected, the other not). I guess your problems have to do with
your bandwidth, so sometimes the connection is closed and re-opened in
the retry interval. Have you defined a static route to your remote
router?
