I'm not sure yet if I should change this. Perhaps there are lots of people who hacked like you.
I noticed the underscore i believe a few months ago when i was looking for a lay-out bug in the generated HTML (view source in browser) and at the time thought it to be good idea. Although i have misused <mm:useinput /> several times (there's no better way to grab a (partial) date or an image when building custom jsp editors, you're pretty sure it'll work :-) And maybe will have to change a few input fields in the future. I still think the underscore is a good idea.
