But hey, that isn't backwards compatible either - it breaks existing JSP
using the ${} syntax. 
In comparison, replacing the TLD is an unobtrusive solution. 
Perhaps it's worth shipping with 2 different TLD's. 

Apart from this, forget about making the taglib more JSP2-savy. It can't
be done in a backwardcompatible way.
