My Hdd also enters sleep mode and I have transmition running on-it.
This is not a bad feature - I even consider-it very positive: while the hdd
is in sleep mode is saves a lot of energy and life time.
I do not have any issue with my fonera running transmition, ushare, motion,
ftp, samba ... with the hdd entering in sleep mode - it wakes up
automatically when you try to access any of its contents.

But note that this should not be a feature of the fonera but only from the
hdd controller.
(I had a previous hdd with a different controller running with my fonera
that did not entered in sleep mode and it last only 1,5 yrs.)
If you still prefer not to have your hdd in sleep mode, I suggest you to buy
a cheap controller from ebay - the ones that cost less than EUR 5,00 do not
have power saving feature.

Good Luck
Nuno
