Just got the kiddies to bed. Here are some answers to questions that have been posed
to me.

1. What version of e-smith? 4.1.1
2. What version of the backup RPM? 1.2.0-11
3. What kind of tape drive? It is a Seagate IDE internal 8GB Hornet TR 4 (Traven)
4. Have I tried CPIO? No, I don't have enough knowledge on CPIO
5. What are you typing for your backup? I have used /sbin/e-smith/backup and tried
flexbackup -fs all -rewind
6. Are there any messages concerning "st0" in the file /var/log/messages? I deleted
/var/log/messages and shutdown the system, rebooted, then tried the backup. Here is
part of messages

Things I have tried on my own

1. Changing the erase_rewind_only to false. I have an IDE drive
2. Changing the flexbackup.conf $device to /dev/nht0 - Did this since I have an IDE
drive. That didn't work at all.

NEW INFO:

Just stuck this IDE tape drive onto yet another newly created machine and it is
working like a champ!!! Relief. Maybe the other machines I put this tape drive on
just weren't compatible. I tried 2 different SCSI tape drives and the IDE drive that
I now have working. All will work with taper, that's why I don't know if it's really
a compatibility issue.

Thanks to all that have tried to help me. If anyone still wants to troubleshoot with
me the 2 other SCSI drives. I will give whatever info you need me to give.

Thanks again for the help.

What version of e-smith, and particularly, what version of the
e-smith-backup RPM do you have? Are there any messages concerning "st0" in
the file /var/log/messages?

Taper obviously works for some where flexbackup doesn't. OTOH, it uses a
proprietary (but not secret) tape format, whereas flexbackup uses generic
formats. And taper cannot be used for an automated restore - you can only
restore from taper's console GUI.
