Hello Vincent et al...
I spent quite a bit of time fiddling with Jabber on my e-smith (4.01) box
with mixed results. I can't really remember what the problems were (it was a
while ago), but it looked very "do-able". There aren't (or there weren't
any) recent rpms of the jabber server, so you will need to go with an older
version (this might have changed). Also, note that the jabber server
requires some dependencies that aren't installed with e-smith 4.01 (I don't
know about the beta as I haven't tested there yet, but might get around to
it). I can't remember what they all were, but there is a listing on the
jabber.org site. I kind of gave up on the rpms and decided to use the
binaries instead. This required installing the gcc complier etc.. on my
e-smith box. I had better success that way (I definitely don't recommend
this as a solution).
Sorry I can't be more specific. My priorities changed and I ran out of
play-time so I didn't really run all the problems down. I might get back to
it some day as it is a very cool product. I will say that I was able to get
the jabber server installed and running so there is hope.

I agree with you. It would be a great addition. Right now I am too busy
with other things to work on it.
It would be a great project for someone to work on as a contribution.
